Why we stopped chasing perfect observability
2 August 2026 · Yevnuch Notes
If nobody owns a chart, it is furniture.
Teams that struggle with releases usually don’t lack tools—they lack agreement on blast radius, who can halt a canary, and what “done” means when metrics disagree. Write those rules down before the next peak hour.
What to decide explicitly
- Which metrics freeze a rollout automatically.
- Who is allowed to override a freeze, and how that is logged.
- How long a canary stays up before promotion.
- Where the rollback command lives, and who has run it this month.
What we skip on purpose
Perfect automation for every edge case. A short checklist that people use beats a 40-page playbook nobody opens. Start with ownership, then automate the boring parts.
If the only person who understands the deploy path is on holiday, you don’t have a platform—you have a bottleneck with a laptop.
